Instant Pot Spaghetti Squash – Quick & Easy!

The Instant Pot or pressure cooker is known for its ability to cook food faster than traditional methods. By utilizing the pressure and heat, it significantly reduces the cooking time, making it a convenient option for busy individuals or those who want to save time in the kitchen. Instead of waiting for almost an hour for the squash to roast in the oven, you can have perfectly cooked spaghetti squash in just a fraction of the time.

Step-by-Step Directions

Follow these tested instructions to cook spaghetti squash in your pressure cooker:

  1. Prepare the squash: Start by washing your spaghetti squash. For this method, it’s recommended to use 3- to 3½-pound squashes. Cut the squash in half crosswise, as this will give you longer strands of squash and better fit in the Instant Pot. Scoop out the seeds from the squash halves.

  2. Place in the pressure cooker: Put the squash halves in the Instant Pot or any 6-quart pressure cooker, cut side up. Add 1 cup of water to the pot.

  3. Lock and cook: Lock the lid of the Instant Pot in place. Set the electric pressure cooker to high pressure and cook for 7 minutes. If you’re using a stove-top cooker, follow the manufacturer’s directions to bring it to pressure over medium-high heat and then reduce the heat to maintain steady pressure. Cook for 7 minutes.

  4. Release the pressure: Once the cooking time is complete, remove the pot from heat if using a stove-top cooker. Let it stand for 5 minutes to release the pressure naturally. For electric pressure cookers, release any remaining pressure carefully according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  5. Shred and serve: Open the lid carefully and use tongs to remove the cooked squash halves. Allow them to cool slightly, then use a fork to shred the flesh into spaghetti-like strands. Serve the strands as desired, either as a base for sauces, in salads, or alongside other dishes.

Cooking the Whole Squash – Not Recommended

Some may wonder if it’s possible to cook the whole spaghetti squash in the Instant Pot, aiming to save on prep time and effort. Our Test Kitchen tried this method by piercing the squash exterior for ventilation and doubling the cook and pressure release times. However, the results were inconsistent. While the edges of the squash were cooked, the center remained uncooked. Additionally, it was challenging to remove the seeds when attempting to shred the strands. Thus, we do not recommend cooking a whole spaghetti squash in the pressure cooker.
