On the Cover
In this special holiday issue, we are thrilled to feature the legendary Dolly Parton on our cover. Dolly, known for her captivating music and larger-than-life personality, brings her unique charm and festive spirit to our pages. Our cover story, written by Jason Sheeler, provides an intimate glimpse into Dolly’s holiday traditions and the deep-rooted significance of this season in her life.
Dolly’s love for all things extravagant shines through as she embraces the bows, ribbons, gold, sparkle, and bling that epitomize the holiday season. From her childhood in Locust Ridge, TN, to her present-day celebrations, Dolly’s maximalist approach to decorating is evident with Christmas trees adorning every room, homespun ornaments, and an affinity for tree skirts and tinsel. According to Dolly, it’s not about being fancy; it’s about doing what makes her happy.
For our captivating photo shoot, a collaborative effort by photographer Art Streiber, set and prop stylist Anthony A. Altomare, and our style director Jessica Thomas, we envisioned Dolly as a precious gift to our millions of readers. She stands as a radiant, sparkling angel atop a towering Christmas tree of gifts. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dolly for gracing our cover, and we invite readers to join us in celebrating her remarkable 67-year career in show business.
Letters from the Editors
As we approach the end of our 100th anniversary year, there couldn’t be a more fitting conclusion than featuring Dolly Parton on the cover. Dolly is not just a talented musician and songwriter; she is a unifying force, someone we can all admire and find inspiration in. Whenever we mention that Dolly will grace our cover, the response is universal—smiles, uplifted gazes, and hands clasped over hearts. We share in this collective joy and look forward to the positive changes that lie ahead in 2023.

The best part of the holidays, for many of us, is the cherished traditions that come alive once a year. As the fall weather arrives, I eagerly anticipate the classic rituals of Christmastime—decorating, movie watching, baking, gift giving, and indulging in delicious meals. While I rely on daily routines to keep everything in order, I’ve come to appreciate the flexibility that accompanies my traditions.
Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers – The Greatest Gift of All (Official Audio)
Over the years, my family has dispersed across the country, living in different states from Alaska to Florida. Gathering together on Christmas morning, as we did in the past, became impossible. However, one tradition has remained constant—a recipe for sausage bread passed down from my Grandma. Regardless of the distance, someone in each household prepares this special dish, with varying degrees of success. With one bite, we are transported back to the joyous, chaotic Christmas mornings of our past, creating cherished memories to hold onto.
Like Dolly, who embraces the art of creating things “like Momma used to,” I find solace in cooking as my Grandma and Mom taught me. This year, as my son experiences his first Christmas, I look forward to sharing these traditions with him, hoping he develops a love for sausage bread as well.
