What Does Elon Musk Invest In
Elon Musk has been at the forefront of innovation for years. He’s launched private spacecraft, designed electric cars, and revolutionized the payment industry with PayPal. What you might not realize is that he has invested millions in various projects as well. His investments can be divided into two main categories: companies he created and other ventures he believes in.
SpaceX is a company that Elon Musk co-founded, and he currently owns the majority of it. It’s based in Hawthorne, California and was founded in 2002. The goal of SpaceX is to make space travel affordable for everyone by helping develop reusable rockets.
The company has launched over sixty missions into space so far, with plans for more launches later this year. Some of their most notable achievements include:
- First privately funded liquid-fuel rocket to reach orbit
- First private company to recover a spacecraft after orbital launch (Dragon)
Elon Musk is an investor in Tesla Motors. Tesla Motors, Inc. is an American automotive and energy storage company that designs, manufactures, and sells electric cars, electric vehicle powertrain components, and battery products. The company also offers long-term storage solutions for residential solar projects. Elon Musk does not have any official position with the company but he has invested in it through one of his investment funds (SpaceX).
Elon Musk has invested in SolarCity, a solar power company. He is the chairman of the board and owns 22% of the company. In 2013, he made an investment of $10 million into the company through his venture capital firm, Tesla Motors Inc.
In 2018, Elon Musk bought out SolarCity for $2 billion after it faced financial difficulties. The purchase saved about 10,000 jobs at SolarCity and helped it continue to grow as an energy company.
One of Elon Musk’s most famous investments is X.com, which eventually became PayPal. The company was founded in 1999 by Max Levchin and Peter Thiel, who had previously worked together at PayPal. In March 2000, Elon Musk invested $10 million into X.com to help them expand their operations into international markets. In 2001, Elon Musk became the chairman of the board and also joined the board of directors for X.com (PayPal). He held that position until 2002 when he left the company after its acquisition by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock options paid out over three years ending August 2004 – which made him a billionaire at age 30!
As you can see, Elon Musk has been extremely active as both an entrepreneur and investor. While not all of the companies he has invested in have gone on to great success, much like any other investor, his successes greatly outweigh his failures. In fact, some venture capitalists say that if you haven’t failed at least once for every five companies you invest in then your portfolio is unlikely to outperform the market. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Musk has a wide range of investments across multiple industries. He is willing to take risks with only one
